From the Municipal Government Act:

242(1) Each council must adopt an operating budget for each calendar year.


BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
The Business Plan and Budget Process is an integral part in dictating the direction of Council’s strategic goals, objectives, and priorities. The process provides departments the opportunity to examine and reassess their objectives and redirect resources to accomplish their goals.

The budget planning process requires Council consideration on several items throughout the year as detailed in attachment titled 2022 Council Budget Calendar. Typically, budgets are presented to Council annually in October and adopted by year-end.

In addition to the Council dates, there are 3 key areas where the city engages residents and stakeholders in the annual budget process?.

The City hosts an open engagement for all members of the public on our online platform. This is live for 3 weeks and Council can view the input in real time, although will also be provided with a summary report (via memo) by the end of the month.?

The City has an external consultant host 2 world café style conversations with a random sampling of residents, although this is not statistically representative. We connect with approximately 40 people through these two sessions. All members of Council are invited to attend but are asked to simply observe. ?
