BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION

As per Policy C-CS-03, Community Recognition Program, Administration advertised and accepted nominations for this program until February 15, 2020.  Seven nominations were submitted.

The Community Services Advisory Committee (CSAC), and the Environmental Advisory Committee reviewed the applications relevant to their Committees as outlined in Policy C-CS-03 Community Recognition Program.  Council was then confidentially advised of the names of the nominees supported by these citizens committees to be honored through the 2020 Community Recognition Program.

                     Dolores Andressen (Environmental Stewardship).

Dolores is a life long environmental advocate.  In 1990, Dolores, along with a few additional community members started the Environmental Action Committee.  One of the successes of this newly formed committee was the introduction of curbside recycling and organic collection programs almost 20 years earlier than these programs were introduced city-wide.  Dolores was also instrumental in the creation of St. Albert Parish Community Garden.

As a teacher with the St. Albert Catholic School system, Dolores introduced several environmental programs, such as the Community Gardens, vermicomposting, water conservation measures, earth school designation, environmental audits, and the city’s first organic collection program in 2012.

                     Krista Monson (Distinguished Achievement).

Krista is a former St. Albert resident who has achieved international recognition for her contributions to the world of Arts. Krista is well known for her leadership with Cirque du Soleil as Artistic Director and Casting Director for numerous shows in Las Vegas, Orlando, Macau, Tokyo, New York, and Los Angeles. She wrote and directed an environmental production for Expo 2015 in Milan.  In 2016 she was appointed creative director for the United Nations Foundation World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, and in 2017 she was guest choreographer for Celine Dion’s concert series in Las Vegas.  Krista graduated from Paul Kane High School in St. Albert and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Alberta before leaving Alberta to pursue her career. While a student in St. Albert, Krista was active with the St. Albert Children’s Theatre.

Nancy Watt (Arts, Music, and Culture).

Nancy is a long-term resident who has provided years of contribution to the community through music, citizenship, and volunteerism.  She has served on the Board of the St. Albert Piano Teachers Association for over 21 years, sat as a Board member and/or provided leadership to numerous organizations included the Rotary Music Festival Board, Chamber Music Society, and the St. Albert Culture Master Plan Committee.  Nancy was the driving force behind the concept and coordination of the “Keys to the City” program which involved pianos situated around the City during the summer months free for public use.

Recipients will be recognized publicly at the start of a future Council meeting.  The names of the recipients will be added to the permanent recognition sculpture located at the northwest corner of Sir Winston Churchill Avenue and Perron Street.
