SUMMARY
The purpose of the Seniors and Elders Service Awards Program is to recognize seniors and individuals whose service enhances the wellbeing of seniors in the City of St. Albert, while encouraging volunteering, civic participation, and community service. Awards may be granted to seniors (55+) for their contributions to the community, or to individuals whose service benefits seniors.
On March 20, 2026, the Seniors’ Advisory Committee (SAC) reviewed nominations and recommended recipients to Council for approval, in accordance with Policy C-CS-24. Subject to Council approval, the Mayor or a Council representative will present certificates to award recipients at a ceremony held during Seniors Week on June 3, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at St. Albert Place.
ALIGNMENT TO COUNCIL DIRECTION OR MANDATORY STATUTORY PROVISION
On June 20, 2023, Council passed the following motion:
CM-23-25
That the City, in consultation with the Seniors Advisory Committee, create a St. Albert Seniors Service Awards recognition annual program. The program will recognize both residents that provide extraordinary volunteer services to seniors in St. Albert, and seniors who provide extraordinary volunteer services in our community, with the recipients reviewed and recommended to Council by the Seniors Advisory Committee and recognized during Seniors’ Week each year.
On Feb 20, 2024, Council approved the Seniors and Elders Service Awards Policy C-CS-24 (See Attachment 2).
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
The Seniors and Elders Service Award Program is in its second year and continues to be refined by the Seniors’ Advisory Committee (SAC) and Administration, as participation trends emerge. In 2025, eleven recipients were nominated and recognized through certificates, website acknowledgement, and an awards ceremony. In 2026, the program experienced increased interest, with eighteen nominations received, and thirteen individuals recommended for recognition. As participation continues to grow, SAC intends to review the program later this year to further refine the process, including consideration of a maximum number of annual recipients and a consistent recognition approach, as well as an opportunity to consider promotional needs and scale of future recognition events and associated budget.
STAKEHOLDER COMMUNICATIONS OR ENGAGEMENT
The Seniors Advisory Committee provided input on all aspects of the program during their November 27, 2025, January 21, 2026, and March 20, 2026 meetings.
IMPACTS OF RECOMMENDATION(S)
Approval of the recommendations supports the implementation of the Seniors and Elders Service Awards Program and reinforces the City’s commitment to recognizing volunteer contributions that benefit seniors and the broader community.
